Supplier qualification questions

  • Is the material manufactured in-house or resold?
  • What analytical methods are used for rare-earth impurities and non-REE impurities?
  • Can the supplier provide retained-sample support for complaints?
  • What is the change-control policy for process or raw-material changes?
  • Can a small qualification sample come from the same process and specification as future production lots?

Do not overpay for purity you do not need

Moving from 3N to 4N to 5N can raise cost and reduce available suppliers. If your process is insensitive to certain impurities, a lower headline purity with controlled critical impurities may be the more robust specification.

  1. Confirm documentation before opening.
  2. Inspect appearance and packaging.
  3. Test critical chemistry and PSD where justified.
  4. Run the real process at small scale.
  5. Define pass/fail criteria before comparing suppliers.
